Slot machines and poker machines are some of the oldest modern forms of gambling. They originated as early as the 20th century and have fascinated audiences ever since. In this article, we will briefly discuss the history of slot machines, how they have evolved over the years, and how online games have replaced mechanical devices.
The very first slot game version was already seen in 1891. Pittman and Sachs created a game with five reels, each containing symbols of poker hands. When players won in these games, the machine did not pay out a profit; instead, the bar where the slot game was located paid out the winnings to the players with drinks.
The first mechanical slot machine was the Liberty Bell invented by auto mechanic Charles Fey (1862-1844) in San Francisco in 1895. The Liberty Bell had three spinning reels. The reels were painted with the symbols of the Ruutu, pata and hertta, as well as images of the ticking Liberty clock. The biggest win, 50 cents, was won when three Liberty clocks appeared on the payline after a spin.

The original Liberty Bell -The slot machine is still on display at the Liberty Belle Saloon & Restaurant in Reno, Nevada. Other slot machines developed by Charles Fey include Draw Poker, Three Spindle and Klondike.
In 1901, Charles Fey invented the first poker machine. Charles Fey also developed an inspection mechanism that was used in the Liberty Bell game. With the hole in the center of the inspection mechanism and the check hole, the device was able to distinguish counterfeit coins from the real ones. Fey rented his machines to saloons and bars in exchange for a 50/50 profit split.

Inside each cast-iron slot machine there were three metal rings, a reel. 10 symbols were painted on each reel. The reels were spun by pulling a lever. When the reels stopped, the jackpot was paid if three identical symbols stopped on the payline. The game machine paid the winnings in coins immediately.
The time of electronics

The first popular electronic game machine was the horse racing game PACES RACES, developed in 1934.
In 1964, Nevada Electronic built the first fully electronic gaming machine called ”21”. It was followed by electronic versions of other gambling games, such as dice games, roulette, horse racing, and poker (Dale Electronics’ Poker-Matic was very popular). In 1975, Fortune Coin Company built the first electronic slot machine.

To reach a wider target audience, modern slot games combine two things: the best digital gaming technology and familiarity with slot games. Mobile apps and online gaming make playing more personal. Today’s digital slot games focus on creating a game experience tailored to the interests of the customer. References to pop culture also take into account the preferences of customers. Games with references to Sons of Anarchy, James Bond, Wheel of Fortune, pop king Michael Jackson, or Oz the Great and Powerful attract wide audiences with diverse personalities and age ranges.
