Almost the same stuff in different packages, i.e. good and affordable active speakers for many uses.

Compact active speakers with HDMI input are a viable alternative to a soundbar speaker and are also suitable for listening to music, gaming, etc. Here are four options based on the same proven basic structure, although some in very different "clothes".

We recently tested (AVPlus 8/2023) affordable active speakers and found a real surprise among them. The Amadeus Harmony speakers, sold by the Power chain and priced at just 130 euros, turned out to be surprisingly good for their price range. The only “criticism” or rather wish was the lack of an HDMI input, which would allow the speakers to be used seamlessly with a TV. The so-called CEC/ARC-compatible HDMI connection allows you to adjust the volume of the speakers with the TV remote control and turn them on and off at the same time as the TV. Oh, and of course, the wish list also included a white color option and a subwoofer output.

After some time, we received a message from a reader that speakers that looked exactly the same, but with an HDMI input, were being sold on the German Amazon online store under the Majority brand (Majority D80) and for only 80 euros each (+ of course, 20 euros in addition to shipping costs).

Around the same time, we also received a message from Power's marketing manager that our wish had been granted: Harmony speakers now have an HDMI connection and are available in white. There's still no subwoofer output, the brand has changed to Cepter, and the price has also increased to 169 euros. But that's okay.

And that's not all. We found two Amadeus active speakers in the same price range (Euphonyn and Melodyyn) on Power's website, which seemed to have exactly the same electronics and amplifier circuit as the Amadeus Harmony, Cepter and Majority D 80. However, with the difference that these also have the subwoofer output. So in the test, four speakers that are similar in a way, but still more or less different.

The Amadeus Euphony (pictured) and Melody also have a subwoofer output. The Cepter (pictured) and Majority do not. On the back of the speakers there is also a separate volume control and bass and treble controls. As well as a power switch, input selection and sound mode selection (EQ).

All speakers use the same electronics/amplifier circuit. Power is produced by a class D DSP amplifier circuit (ESMT AD83566B, the “bug” in the picture above, it’s getting smaller…), which also includes DSP and multi-band eq. If anyone is interested in the inner workings of the circuit, so here's more information. This DSP is probably the key to a good sound result here.

Same and different

Let's start with the Majority D80, which our readers spotted on the German Amazon online store. They are indeed the “same” speakers as the Amadeus Harmonys we tested a while ago, but this time with an HDMI input. Many Chinese factories manufacture the same products under several brands for different markets and really for anyone who orders enough at once. This Majority is a “British” brand in itself, and its products were also included in this issue's soundbar speaker test.

Majority (and Amadeus Harmony) speakers are active speakers with a slightly Genelec-influenced design. Or rather, none of the speakers in the comparison are “real” active speakers. They usually have amplifiers in each speaker of a stereo pair and separate amplifiers for different elements, and an electrically implemented crossover filter before them. In all the speakers in the test, the amplifier is located in only one speaker, while the other is a “regular” passive speaker. Well, these are still called active speakers.

The round-shaped enclosures are made of dark gray plastic and feel sturdy. There are rubber feet on the front and back of the enclosure, which also tilt the speaker slightly upwards. The 25 mm fabric dome tweeter has a gentle deflector molded into the enclosure. The woofer has a nominal diameter of 4 inches (102 mm). There are solid black metal meshes in front of the elements. The reflex-tuned enclosure's reflex tube opens to the back of the enclosure. The tube is surprisingly long, curving downwards towards the contents of the enclosure.

The amplifier and all the connections are therefore only on one speaker. The connections include an RCA line input, an optical digital input, a USB slot (media player), and the previously mentioned HDMI input. And of course an output for the second speaker. In addition, the amplifier also has a wireless Bluetooth connection.
