Testing ProCaster S3 compact active multi-function speakers

The ProCaster S3 speakers cost a very reasonable 159,99 euros per pair, and their key advantage, besides the price, is the exceptionally wide range of connections: HDMI ARC/CEC, optical input, RCA, USB-A, Bluetooth 5.3 and subwoofer output. This means that the S3 can be used directly with a TV, computer, network player, DAC or other line-level audio source.

The speakers are rated at 2 × 25 watts RMS, and the design is based on 104 mm bass/midrange drivers and 25 mm tweeters. The enclosures are reflex-tuned, with the tubes located on the front panel of the speakers.

The ProCaster S3 is a so-called semi-active speaker pair. The amplifier and connections are located in one speaker (left channel), from which the signal is taken via the included speaker cable to the second, passive speaker (right channel). In this type of structure, the amplified speaker signal is usually distributed to the elements via a passive crossover.

In a fully active speaker, the crossover is done before amplification, and each element has its own amplifier channel. This allows for more precise element-specific control, but makes the structure more complex and usually more expensive. In the practical product group, models like the ProCaster S3 are still generally called active speakers, because they do not require a separate amplifier.

The dimensions of the speakers are 175 × 155 × 248 millimeters and weigh 3,7 kg. The finish is black wood veneer with black removable front fabrics. The package includes a power supply, user manual, 3,5 mm - RCA cable, remote control and 2,5 meter L/R speaker cable. This "speaker cable" is otherwise a regular thin and still relatively stiff RCA line cable and is therefore also equipped with RCA connectors. Probably to make the connection easier, but it feels a bit flimsy.
