The Vestlydin Power Monitor range received two active versions
The Danish Vestlydin Power Monitor speaker range has been expanded with two active stereo pairs. The M6C Active and M8C Active continue the design line influenced by the great monitors of the 1970s that are characteristic of the manufacturer, but the amplifiers and the central electronics are now placed directly in the speaker system.
With the new products, the traditional active speaker is aimed at achieving more versatile use. The speaker pair can be connected directly to, for example, a television, computer, disc player, or a balanced audio source commonly found in professional settings, so a device setup built around a separate stereo amplifier is not necessarily necessary.
Both models use four separate 75-watt PWM-controlled Class D amplifier channels. This is an active two-way configuration, with each of the stereo pairs having its own amplifier channel dedicated to the bass mid and treble frequencies.
The coaxial structure is at the heart of the entire concept
In the Vestlydin Power Monitor solution, the tweeter is positioned in the center of the bass midrange. Through the coaxial structure, the sound from the different frequency ranges is routed from practically the same point, aiming for a more even directionality and a wider listening area.
The bass cone with its low frequency response is also used as the tweeter's direction. In the larger Power Monitor models from Vestlyd, the same principle has been used specifically to achieve high sound pressure and a smooth dispersion pattern. In a conventional speaker designed with separate bass and tweeter elements, the physical distance between the elements can, in turn, be seen as a variable response depending on the listening angle.

The M6C Activessa uses a 6.5-inch paper cone bass driver and a one-inch titanium cone tweeter. The frequency range is defined as 43 Hz–24 kHz with a 6-dB limit and 47.5 Hz–22 kHz with a 3-dB limit.

The bass-oriented M8C Activessa grows to an eight-inch size. At the same time, the -6 dB threshold frequency drops to 36 Hertz and the -3 dB limit to 39.5 Hertz. The upper end correspondingly extends to 24 and 22 kilohertz depending on the measurement range used.
M8C Active aims for a larger scale
The basic concept of the models and the electronics are largely the same, but there is a clear difference between them in terms of physical size and the bass element.
The M6C Activen measures 36.3 × 24.6 × 21.6 centimeters. A more compact enclosure and a 6.5-inch driver make it an easier option to place in a smaller listening space, a desktop environment, or a studio setup.
The M8C Active measures 44.3 × 29.0 × 27.0 centimeters. The eight-inch driver and larger enclosure allow for extended bass reproduction, and the model also emphasizes higher sound pressure and dynamics.
Using a separate subwoofer is not excluded in either case, as both models have a subwoofer output. However, the M8C Active is designed to reproduce frequencies below 40 Hz as is.
The television and the record player can be connected directly
The connection selection is one of the most interesting features of the M6C Activa and M8C Activa.
For television use, HDMI eARC is available, allowing volume control via a compatible TV without a separate AV amplifier or soundbar. Additionally, digital audio sources feature an optical input and USB-C. The maximum resolution for digital audio is reported to be 24 bit/192 kHz.
Wireless playback is handled using Bluetooth 5.1. Supported codecs are AAC, aptX HD, and aptX Low Latency for reducing latency.
On the analog side, the RCA and combined XLR and 6.35 mm jack connectors are in use. The RCA input can also be used with a turntable equipped with an MM audio cartridge, so a separate phono preamp is not necessary in such a configuration.
The overall design differs significantly from other streaming-focused active speakers. The M6C Active and M8C Active can be built around the audio output from a television just as well as they can be used as the foundation for a traditional two-channel music system.
There are three ready-made profiles for the sound
The use can be changed with three pre-set audio profiles. Options include settings for music, movies, and neutral listening. The bass and treble levels can also be fine-tuned from the speaker’s rear panel.
A loudspeaker containing electronics can be defined as either the left or right channel. This solution makes placement easier, as the location of the wires and audio sources does not need to be determined according to a pre-determined main speaker.
There is also a 35 mm base mounting for the stand. The M6C Activelle and M8C Activelle are also available with the M-Stands floor stands designed specifically for these models, which allow the wiring to be routed inside the pillar.
For finishing, you can choose a black faux leather surface or a PVC surface that mimics teak. The speaker cabinets are made of MDF board.
In Finland, prices range from 900 to 1,150 euros
The Vestlyd M6C Active costs 899 euros in Finland at the moment for a stereo pair. The price of the larger M8C Active is 1,149 euros. Both models are listed as new products in Finland.
In its price range, the duo interestingly straddles the line between a traditional hi-fi system and a modern active speaker solution. A separate amplifier is not required, but for example, you don't have to compromise on a turntable, television, and computer, either.
At the same time, Vestlyd has retained the more visually striking approach of the Power Monitor series. Instead of small and inconspicuous active speakers, the M6C Active and M8C Active are designed to look like loudspeakers – and their technical implementation clearly aims for both high dynamics and loudness, rather than just the most compact size possible.
