Samsung has announced that its upcoming 2020 8K QLED TVs are among the first televisions to receive the 8K Association certification. This is signified by a new logo.
To obtain the certificate, 8K-compatible devices are tested. The resolution must of course be at 8K level, in addition, the maximum brightness must reach at least 600 nits, the television must have HDMI2.1 technology and support the HVEC codec.
The purpose of the marking is to help consumers identify 8K-compatible devices. What makes the situation more complicated is that there is also the CTA 8K standard available. Another Korean giant, LG, recently announced that its televisions will support this standard. The parameters are very similar in the certificates, but the CTA also requires 50 percent contrast modulation. This means that at least half of the pixels must be able to be distinguished with the naked eye.
There will probably be new 8K televisions on display at the CES consumer electronics show starting next week.
