Audio Anatomy 5 (AA5) is a new loudspeaker project by Finnish loudspeaker designer Antti Louhivaara. The loudspeakers received their debut at the Audio Video Show 2024 in Warsaw, and in Finland they were presented for the first time at the Helsinki HighEnd show in spring.
For many music enthusiasts, Louhivaara is already a familiar name, partly thanks to Amphion and especially to Aurelian, who has gained a reputation in tests.
Audio Anatomy is in itself a new player in the loudspeaker market, backed by an Austrian-Polish company that focuses primarily on audio equipment. The loudspeaker pair tested here is still a prototype, but it closely resembles the final version.
Audio Anatomy 5 is an externally very classically-looking, medium-sized, reflex-driven 2-way floorstand speaker, finished with genuine walnut veneer.
The speaker's specialty is its unique treble resolution. The treble unit consists of three titanium cone elements arranged in overlapping rows in what is known as a waveguide structure (directionally).
Louhivaara has previously used this Wavefront Linear Radiation mode successfully in, among other things, the Aurelia Cerica and Graphica speakers.
The method aims for controlled directionality with the goal of minimizing room reflections. The treble waveguide directs sound effectively, especially in a vertical direction, which helps eliminate both floor and ceiling reflections and also helps coordinate the reproduction of elements that play different sound ranges. This is also supported by the exceptionally low phase shift of 1500 Hz.
Using more than one disc brake also increases sensitivity, thus distributing the load, reduces wear and improves durability.
Due to the strong vertical orientation, the listening height is very important here. The optimal point is located directly in front of the treble speakers. Even a small deviation in the vertical direction clearly affects the reproduction of the upper frequencies. The head should be centered in front of the treble speakers; that is, a fairly classic height for a sofa. The speakers should be placed based on the listening height, on pedestals that are 45–70 cm high and directed as precisely as possible towards the listening position.
The subwoofer midrange driver in the speakers is 6.5 inches (165 mm) and was designed by Antti Louhivaara himself. The driver is the same as the one used in the Aurelian Cerica and Graphica models in the past.
