Software company Microsoft Corporation has decided to implement the controversial reform in the new update of the Windows 11 operating system.
Windows operating systems have a BitLocker drive encryption program that allows users to encrypt and protect their data and files. Previously, BitLocker had to be enabled manually, but now things are changing.
However, in the new 24H2 update of Windows 11, BitLocker is enabled by default when logging in to 11 or installing it with a Microsoft account. The underlying idea behind the update is sound, and Microsoft has even lowered the hardware requirements for BitLocker, but there are several practical problems with the matter.
The biggest problem is that the majority of Windows users are not used to using BitLocker. While the software encrypts data and files, in the future it requires a password set by the user to access them. This is necessary, for example, when installing a new device.
The problem is that if the user forgets their password, they will not be able to access their own data and files in any way. The implementation of BitLocker can still be circumvented by installing one of the 11 local accounts or by disabling BitLocker manually through Windows settings.
Another observed problem is that BitLocker can affect the performance of SSD hard drives on some devices. According to tests, BitLocker can slow down SSD drives by up to 45 percent.
