Dolby Atmos FlexConnect promises to solve one of the eternal problems of multichannel audio: the speakers don’t need to be exactly in the right positions. The TCL Z100 speakers can be built around a compatible TCL TV to create a wireless and automatically calibrated surround system that adapts the audio to the speakers’ actual position.
Dolby Atmos FlexConnect attempts to solve one of the most difficult practical problems of home theater: the speakers do not need to be placed exactly in predetermined positions. The TCL Z100 speakers can be built around a compatible TCL TV to create a wireless and automatically calibrated surround system where the roles of the speakers are determined by their actual location.
In the test, the combination of two Z100 speakers and the Z100-SW subwoofer proved exceptionally easy to set up, and FlexConnect also adapted quite convincingly to asymmetrical speaker placement. With just two speakers, the soundfield noticeably expanded to encompass the television’s own audio, and the subwoofer added the necessary weight to the overall setup. At the same time, the system’s limitations became apparent: the Atmos height effect depends on the room, there are few adjustment options, and the front speaker relies largely on the television’s own speakers.
It is precisely here that the FlexConnect idea is at its most interesting and most unfinished. The technology offers genuinely more freedom than a traditional multi-channel system, but in its current form it is tied to compatible TCL TVs and the price of the full system already rises to the level of a better soundbar setup. The test showed where FlexConnect succeeds, where it falls short – and why there could be even more potential in the concept than the current implementation exploits.
Building multi-channel home theater sound usually requires at least some kind of soundbar or AV amplifier with several precisely positioned speakers. A soundbar is, in principle, the simplest solution, but even if there were separate rear speakers and a subwoofer included, its structure would not be able to achieve the same spaciousness, channel separation, and dynamics as a properly implemented separate speaker system.
The AV amplifier and separate speakers certainly produce the best result most reliably, but then, speaking of the complex whole, of the precise placement of the speakers and, of course, the cabling.
Between these two solutions lies the FlexConnect technology developed by Dolby, which offers a kind of intermediate solution between the simplicity of a soundbar and the better sound quality and spaciousness of a separate speaker system.
It is a wireless multi-channel system where the loudspeakers do not need to be located exactly in predetermined positions. The system recognizes the loudspeakers in use, measures their location, and automatically adjusts the audio output to the configuration and room in use.
The TCL implementation of FlexConnect is the Z100, a wireless speaker that is used in conjunction with a compatible TCL television. The television acts as the hub of the system: it recognizes the speakers, measures their location, and distributes the audio between the television’s own speakers and the Z100 speakers.
