The new XM5 headphones focus on even better sound quality and active noise cancellation, which has also been enhanced with 360-degree virtual surround sound. Rumors and small revelations about the headphones have been circulating for the last year. Many have been eagerly awaiting what Sony will bring to the market this time around as the successors to the 2019 XM4 headphones.
The new WF-1000XM5 headphones focus on sound quality and noise reduction. The headphones include two noise reduction processors that are said to be the best on the market. Additionally, Sony has updated the headphones with a new speaker element called Dynamic Driver X. The new system targets a wider frequency range, which means finer details. The system aims to reduce noise more effectively at low frequencies, which significantly expands the noise reduction area. According to Sony, the materials used in the fabric itself reduce distortion, although the company does not provide any precise details.
The HD Noise Cancelling Prover QNe2 and Integrated Processor V2 process 24-bit audio together to create high-performance analog amplification. Analog amplification essentially means that Sony aims to create sound that is as true and authentic as the original, rather than through digital manipulation.
As you might expect, the WF-1000XM5 headphones use Sony’s famous LDAC codec, which transmits more data than the headphones can process or reproduce. The more data there is, the better the sound should be in the final product. However, this technology has been around for some time. As a novelty, there’s the DSEE Extreme AI technology, which improves compressed digital music from services like Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music so that users can enjoy better sound from low-quality files.
Externally, the WF-1000XM5 headphones are round-shaped, which distinguishes them from the XM4 model. The front of the case is matte, while the edges are glossy. The case that holds the new headphones charged is round and seems to fit well in a pocket. With the case, the headphones can last up to 24 hours when charged and eight hours without the case.
With Sony’s Headphone Connect app, users can also take advantage of the 360 Reality Audio feature on the XM5. This function creates a virtual soundscape that enhances the listening experience, although it has proven to be somewhat of a specialty. Another feature is the Speak-to-Chat function, which allows users to keep their headphones on and chat between songs without the music continuing. The headphones pause the music whenever they detect a listener speaking.
Touch controls are available on the Sony WF-1000XM5 headphones, and you can tap on the headphones’ surface to pause music, start it again, or control the background noise cancellation. The XM5 goes one step further with head movement. A simple nod accepts incoming calls, while shaking your head rejects them. Additionally, Sony has equipped the XM5 headphones with Google Fast Pair, which makes connecting to your phone easier. This also means that the Google Assistant is built into the headphones.
Sales of the WF-1000XM5 headphones will begin in August at a recommended price of 330 euros, which is 50 euros more than its predecessor.
