Experimenting with the Shokz OpenFit 2 open-ear headphones for mobile use that are open and lightweight
Reading Time: 5 mins read
A A

The Shokz OpenFit 2+ continues the manufacturer’s line of open “open-ear” headphones, combining lightweight and comfortable design, long battery life, and clear audio control. Improvements such as wireless Qi charging, physical buttons, and improved sound make it an attractive option especially for outdoor activities and situations where it’s important to hear environmental sounds.

There are currently plenty of options in the headphones market, including models that do not cover or support the traditional way of listening. In the case of earbud headphones, one growing category is bone conduction headphones (bone conduction), which transmit sound through the bones of the skull to the inner ear, and air conduction headphones (air conduction), which transmit sound from outside the ear to the ear canal without tight fit. Both leave the ear canal open, which improves the perception of ambient sounds and makes wearing more comfortable because the ears do not get hot or tired. Many also find models that are tightly fitted to the ear uncomfortable during prolonged use.

OpenFit 2+

Shokz, previously known as AfterShokz, has become known for its over-ear headphones. In recent years, it has expanded its lineup to include open-ear headphones. The OpenFit 2+ is the newest of these and brings several improvements over its predecessor: wireless Qi charging, better physical buttons, and finely tuned sound. The design is based on Shokz’s DirectPitch technology, and it also features Dolby Audio mode.

In use

OpenFit 2+ fits securely on most people and feels almost imperceptible in the ears. In our tests, they stayed in place on the treadmill and in the gym, but during hard running or shaking your head, the ankle might move slightly. Compared to the earbud headphones, the open design distributes the weight on the earbud, and the earbud does not slide into the ear canal, which makes the fit airy and pressure-free. The physical buttons are well positioned, they respond quickly and require only a light touch. This is a clear advantage compared to models equipped with many touch controls, especially in motion.

The Shokz OpenFit 2+ moves lightly around the ear and rests against the earlobe so that the ear cup does not slide into the ear canal. This design makes the fit airy and pressure-free, and it stays firmly in place during everyday use and light exercise.

Battery life remains one of the model's strengths: about 10–11 hours with one charge and a total of up to 48 hours with the case. The charging case now also supports Qi wireless charging, and quick charging gives about two hours of playback with a ten-minute charge.

An objective voice

In terms of sound quality, the OpenFit 2+ reaches balanced performance within its limits. The mid-range is clean and colorless, the treble is crisp without any metallic overtones, and the bass is reasonable, although the deepest lows are naturally left to fall short of the level of the earphone headphones. The Dolby Audio mode adds additional spatial perception to the sound and can be particularly useful with slightly muted recordings. The inherent drawback of the open-ear design is sound leakage into the environment. In public transport or in quiet rooms, a neighbor may hear the music. The Shokz app (Android/iOS) offers basic settings, EQ presets, a five-band equalizer, multipoint support, and the ability to control the Dolby Audio mode.

With the Shokz app, you can customize the button functions of the OpenFit 2+ headphones, manage the Dolby Audio mode, and adjust the volume using EQ presets or your own frequency correction.

Suitable for many people

The Shokz OpenFit 2+ is a successful update in the open-ear category. It doesn’t radically change the concept, but adds usability and comfort with small, practical improvements. Its lightweight and discreet fit, good battery life, and clear controls make it a viable option for those who value the ambient sound and open feel of the environment. The Basso doesn’t compare to closed models, but the overall sound is pleasant and balanced.

Light and comfortable fit
Long battery life and wireless charging
Clear physical buttons
Balanced sound (within the limits of the structure)

Lack of deepest bass
Sound leakage into the environment
