The combination of a picture frame and a speaker is actually the most perfect combination for playing background music at home and in many other environments.
The Samsung Music Frame LS60D is a wireless standalone speaker that looks like a picture frame – and it is. The 35 x 36 cm frame can hold any art poster or picture you want. It comes with one picture motif (an LP image). The picture area is 33 x 33 cm, or smaller with a mount. The speaker comes with a black frame as standard, but white frames are also available as an option (€60). Other colors may be available, and you can also paint the frame yourself.
The speaker can be mounted on a wall or used on a table or counter with the included stand. The depth of the speaker is approximately 5,5 cm, but the manufacturer does not directly state this information. The wall mount adds a little depth, so it is not a completely flat speaker. With the table stand, the total depth is 14,3 cm. When wall mounting, the bass drivers at the back and the need for a power cord must be taken into account.
The speaker has six drivers: two woofers, two midrange drivers and two tweeters – one for each channel. The speaker offers a true stereo effect. The sound image is complemented by Dolby Atmos processing and SpaceFit Sound room correction, which optimizes the sound according to the acoustics of the room.
Performance and sound quality
There is no specific information about the power, but based on the stated power consumption of 18 W, the device's power is estimated to be a maximum of 2 x 7 watts. However, this is sufficient, and the speaker produces a surprisingly large amount of sound when needed - more than enough for background music use.
Audio is transmitted via Wi-Fi, Chromecast, AirPlay or Bluetooth 5.2. The speaker supports streaming services such as Spotify Connect and also has an optical connection. The speaker's settings, including bass and treble adjustments, are controlled using Samsung's SmartThings app.
The speaker can be paired with compatible Samsung TVs to produce surround sound, and two Music Frame speakers can be configured as a stereo pair, further enhancing the soundstage.
The Samsung Music Frame is surprisingly impressive considering its size and build. The bass is punchy and the midrange is warm, making the sound pleasant for most music styles. However, the treble is a bit muddy at times, and bright tones aren't always as clear as you'd like. You can fine-tune the sound with the bass and treble controls in the app. When used with background music, the sound is excellent considering the size and purpose of the speaker.
