Apple Inc., one of the world's largest mobile device manufacturers, has released its much-anticipated iPhone 16 lineup. Initially, there will be two different models available.
The new iPhone models are the standard 16 and 16 Plus. Both models have three different storage options: 128 GB, 256 GB and 512 GB. The color options are black, white, pink, cyan and ultramarine.
The 16 model also brings a new A18 circuit, more durable display glass, an operating button and a completely new Kamerasäädin button, improvements to the cameras, and longer battery life.
More impressive features
On the display side, the 16 and 16 Plus differ clearly from each other. The 16 has a 6.1-inch display and the 16 Plus has a 6.7-inch display. Both are made with AMOLED technology and have a 60-hertz refresh rate. The Ceramic Shield glass on the display surface is also 50 percent tougher than before.
The 16 model also includes a new A18 system chip. As part of the system chip, an updated 6-core central processor, a 5-core graphics processor, and a 16-core neural network unit have been added, which is up to twice as fast in artificial intelligence calculations.
Thanks to their technological features, the iPhone 16 phones will support the new Apple Intelligence artificial intelligence functions that have been previously introduced, but which will not be included in the iOS 18 operating system version immediately.
The gradual release of Apple Intelligence functions is starting later in the autumn with the iOS 18.1 operating system version, but due to regulatory reasons, for now Apple Intelligence functions will not be officially released in the EU area at all.
Apple Intelligence features include a smarter Siri assistant, new text-generating and editing tools, summary functions for texts and notifications, call recording and transcription, the ability to remove extra things from photos, generative AI emojis, and the Image Playground, which creates images.
The cameras are once again top-notch
Behind the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are still the 48-megapixel main camera and the 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera. The latter is also equipped with autofocus.
The 48-megapixel main camera has an f/1.6 aperture and a level-of-excellence optical image stabilizer. The pixel size is 1.0 microns. The 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera has a 1.4-micron pixel size and an f/2.2 aperture. The light recording capability is 2.6 times that of the iPhone 15 ultra-wide-angle camera.
As a novelty, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus have support for Wi-Fi 7. Support for satellite connections is still included, although Apple still does not support them in Finland.
The chassis of the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Plus still uses aluminum, unlike the titanium chassis of the Pro models. The durability is rated IP68 for dust and water resistance, with the phones being able to be submerged for 30 minutes at a depth of six meters. The thickness of the phones is 7.80 millimeters, the same as the previous iPhone 15 models.
The iPhone 16 has a larger battery than before, and with a more energy-efficient A18 chip, it has better battery life. In watching streaming videos, the battery life on the iPhone 16 reaches up to 18 hours, compared to the iPhone 15's 16 hours, and on the iPhone 16 Plus it reaches up to 24 hours, compared to the iPhone 15 Plus's 20 hours.
In addition to the USB-C connection, wireless charging is still supported. With the new, more efficient MagSafe charger, the maximum charging power supported is up to 25 watts. Traditional Qi charging is supported at 7.5 watts.
