Five manufacturers, five different approaches and one common goal: to offer a full-fledged floorstanding speaker in the price range of around a thousand euros. A group of modern, relatively sleek and white floorstanding speakers were selected for comparison, with similar size, price and intended use. However, listening quickly showed that appearance or technical structure alone do not tell the whole story. Was the winner found with showiness, bass power or a balanced overall look?

Speakers in comparison:

DALI Cube 5
JBL Stage 260F
Monitor Audio Bronze 300 G7
Pro-Ject Speaker Box 10 E Carbon
Q Acoustics 3050C

The 1,000 euro price range is one of the most competitive segments of the loudspeaker market. It is also the level at which buyers already expect true hi-fi performance, but where manufacturers still have to make compromises in terms of construction, materials and finish. However, development has been rapid in recent years, and many solutions that were only found in significantly more expensive model ranges a while ago have also migrated to more affordable products.

Five fairly similarly priced floorstanding speakers were selected for this comparison, with prices ranging between 800 and 1250 euros. What they all had in common was a relatively slim build, the availability of a white finish, and the manufacturers' effort to combine a living room-friendly appearance with the performance of a full-size floorstanding speaker. The range includes both completely new collections and already established product families, whose design philosophies differ surprisingly widely.

The speakers in the comparison were the Danish DALI Sonik 5, the American JBL Stage 260F, the British Monitor Audio Bronze 300 G7, the Austrian Pro-Ject Speaker Box 10 E Carbon and the British Q Acoustics 3050C. Although the price level was quite close to each other, there were significant differences in physical dimensions, technical solutions and design emphasis. Pro-Ject was clearly the smallest and most affordable speaker in the comparison, while JBL and Monitor Audio represented the largest models in the group. DALI and Q Acoustics were placed in between these in both size and price.

There were traditional paper and wood fiber cones, aluminum and soft dome tweeters, as well as manufacturers' own special solutions. DALI brought SMC magnet technology familiar from more expensive model series, JBL utilized the HDI waveguide structure inherited from its professional speakers, Monitor Audio invested in the RST II cone structure and Q Acoustics in the new C3 Continuous Curved Cone element. Pro-Ject, on the other hand, approached the task in a more minimalist and compact way than any of its competitors.

The goal of the comparison was not to find the most impressive, bass-heavy, or technically complex speaker. Instead, the focus was on how well different manufacturers have managed to combine sound quality, practicality, appearance, and price into a balanced whole. During the listening sessions, it quickly became clear that while all the speakers were successful in their own way, they approached good sound in very different ways.

DALI (Danish Audiophile Loudspeaker Industries) is a Danish loudspeaker manufacturer founded in 1983. The brand is known for its loudspeakers that emphasize natural sound reproduction, easy placement and understated Nordic design. DALI's products are designed in Denmark, although manufacturing now also takes place partly in Asia.

The Sonik series is the manufacturer's new collection, replacing the very popular Oberon series. The collection includes the floorstanding speakers Sonik 1 and 3, the floorstanding speakers Sonik 5 (test model), 7 and 9, as well as a center speaker and surround speakers for home theater use. The Sonik 5, which costs 1000 euros per pair, is positioned in the middle of the model series.
