Withings' new smart scale also measures ECG, body composition and nerve activity

Withings, focused on health monitoring, introduced a highly versatile Body Scan smart scale. It weighs the body with an exceptionally accurate 50 gram accuracy, but in addition, the scale also measures ECG, vascular age, nerve activity, and body composition. The manufacturer described the novelty as a home-use health station. At CES 2022, the novelty won an award in three Innovation Honoree Awards categories.

The scale itself is made of glass and has four weighing sensors and 14 ITO electrodes. The retractable handle contains four electrodes. The device is promised to last a year. The device also has its own 3.2-inch LCD color display.

For ECG measurement, i.e., heart electrical activity tracing and other more sophisticated features, the wand has a manually-operated handle. ECG is recorded with more electrodes on the wand than on the handle. Using an algorithm, potential atrial fibrillation-related heart rhythm disorders are tracked. The readings can also be tracked over a longer period of time by recording them. The data can also be shared with a medical professional via an app.

Body composition measurement shows the percentage of fat and water, as well as muscle and bone mass. The result is reported per body part. The measurement uses bioelectrical impedance analysis. The time required is only three seconds.

Muscle activity is measured by sending small electrical currents to the leg sweat glands. The measurement takes less than 30 seconds, and the application of the result provides a clear score. The assessment is based on the ability of the sweat glands to release chloride ions in response to an electrical stimulus. Decreased sweat gland innervation may lead to nerve cell degeneration.

The scale is connected to the Withings mobile app. The app guides you towards healthier lifestyles and a better quality of life with the help of health experts’ advice. It includes personal health plans that can be used creatively to achieve your own health goals. They have been developed in collaboration with doctors, cardiologists, and neurologists.

The Withings Body Scan smart scale will have to wait a little longer for the market, as its sales will begin in the second half of the year after receiving the CE mark. The price of the device is 319.95 euros, which includes the Withings health and wellness programs for three months. The color can be chosen between black and white.
