Harman Kardon SoundSticks 5 -2.1 active speakers tested – A design classic for the modern era

The Harman Kardon SoundSticks 5 Wi-Fi updates one of the most iconic design speakers to the present day. The transparent 2.1 design remains unchanged, but now includes Wi-Fi streaming, app control, ambient lighting and background sounds. The SoundSticks 5 Wi-Fi sounds rich for its size and offers a good stereo image thanks to the separate satellites, but the best result requires a little adjustment with the app's equalizer.

Read the summary...

The Harman Kardon SoundSticks 5 Wi-Fi continues the more than 20-year-old SoundSticks line, which is still recognizable by its transparent satellite speakers and separate subwoofer. The new Wi-Fi version brings network streaming, such as AirPlay, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect and Roon Ready support. The parallel SoundSticks 5 base model, meanwhile, has HDMI ARC, which is not found in the Wi-Fi version.

In terms of sound quality, the strengths of the SoundSticks 5 Wi-Fi are the stereo image produced by separate satellites and the rich playback for its size. However, the bass is clearly too strong at the factory settings, and for the best result, you need to use the Custom EQ in the Harman Kardon One app. The app also offers lighting adjustments and separate background sounds.

The SoundSticks 5 Wi-Fi is first and foremost a visible lifestyle speaker system, where design, network playback and app control play a central role. It's not a completely problem-free solution, but when properly configured, it offers a distinctive alternative to standard wireless speakers.

Read the full article if you want more detailed observations about sound quality, the app, the differences between the model versions, and for which users the Wi-Fi version is a more sensible choice than the basic model.

A design classic for the modern era

Harman Kardon SoundSticks are one of the longest-lasting audio products, with a basic design that has remained recognizable for decades.

The series traces its roots back to 1999, when Apple and Harman Kardon introduced the transparent iSub subwoofer for the iMac. The actual SoundSticks were released the following year, in July 2000, at Macworld. The original SoundSticks were a 2.1 speaker system that, as the name suggests, featured two narrow, rod-like “sound sticks” as satellite speakers and a separate iSub subwoofer.

Soundsticks 2000

The transparent structure fit into the same visual world as the iMac computers of the era, and the iSub later ended up in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The design and basic idea of the SoundSticks have remained largely the same, although the technology has been updated several times. The SoundSticks II introduced a 3,5mm analog input in 2004 to replace the original USB connection, the SoundSticks Wireless added Bluetooth in 2012, and the SoundSticks 4 was the first major external update to the lineup in 2020.
