Chinese company FiiO has announced a new desktop-based DAC/headphone amplifier called the K7. Founded in 2007, the company was originally founded by former employees of Oppo. Oppo is behind the OnePlus phone brand, among other things. FiiO is best known for its DACs, music players, portable headphone amplifiers, and headphones.
The input connections are USB, optical, coaxial, and RCA. The signal path is balanced, and the channels are separated from each other throughout the entire journey to prevent crosstalk. The DA conversion is handled by two Velvet Sound AKM AK4493S circuits, one for each channel. After that, the low-pass filter, volume control, buffer amplifier, preamp, and headphone output follow. The output connections are 6.3 mm unbalanced and 4.4 mm balanced outputs. Power is provided by an external 12 volt power supply.
The DA converter is capable of 32-bit and 384 kHz PCM quality and 11.2 MHz DSD quality. The XMOS XUF208 decoder circuit ensures timing accuracy. The amplifiers are two THX AAA 788+ units, which are said to effortlessly drive both low and high impedance headphones. The front panel has settings for gain level, making it easy to adjust the amplifier to suit different headphones. According to the specifications, the output power is 560 milliwatts at a load of 300 ohms and at a distortion of one percent. At a load of 32 ohms, the output power is equivalent to 2,000 milliwatts.
The price and availability in Finland are not yet known.
