According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), the center organization of the international music industry, digital streaming of music, which is at the center of the audio industry’s transformation, grew by 60.4 percent during 2016.
Already over 112 million people pay for popular streaming services like Spotify and Tidal. Despite the rising numbers, artists have repeatedly criticized the profit-sharing models of streaming services. It is to be hoped that some of the growing revenue will also end up in the hands of content creators.
Overall, the entire recording industry grew by 5.9 percent last year. Streaming helped offset the five-percentage-point drop in digital downloads and the weaker 7.6 percent decline in physical music sales. Overall, during 2016, digital music generated more than half of the entire recording industry's revenue for the first time. The recording industry generated approximately $15.7 billion in revenue in 2016.
