Sound directly from the wall? Here's how to do it!

Sometimes even a small speaker just doesn’t take up any space – let alone a larger one. The problems behind this may be aesthetic, sound quality-related, or installation-related. However, a speaker generally needs at least some space around it, and corner placement always carries its own risks.

One option for placing a speaker on the floor or on a level surface is in itself an old and familiar wall speaker, which is then installed with mounting screws directly into the wall at the desired location. Unlike traditional solutions, modern ones also offer very discreet and compact speaker solutions, such as the affordable Saxo series models from the Danish company System Audio.

The System Audio Saxo 6 is a two-way speaker measuring 20 centimeters wide, 31 centimeters high, and 10.5 centimeters deep, designed to be mounted on a wall. Weighing only 3.8 kilograms for its dimensions of A4 size, the speaker can be installed either vertically or horizontally. The manufacturer offers up to two dust covers in the sales package for the above-mentioned mounting options.

In principle, the Saxo 6 is a conventional two-way loudspeaker in a closed housing with treble and bass mid-range elements. The speaker’s radiation pattern is slightly wider, as a patented DXT acoustic lens has been used, so the sound spreads evenly throughout the room. The cone material of the bass mid-range element is said to be lightweight to ensure accurate and pure reproduction.

The speaker's enclosure and overall design are designed to take advantage of the wall mounting. The bass is deeper and the overall sound is richer, but unnecessary vibrations are not transmitted to the wall.

The System Audio Saxo 6 is an excellent choice for those looking for a quieter and smaller speaker, but its true strengths in sound and ease of setup come to the fore as a surround speaker in a home theater system. Thanks to its lightweight design, it can also be mounted on the ceiling, allowing it to be used as part of a Dolby Atmos system. In a more traditional 5.1 system, it works well as, for example, a center or rear speaker.
