Yamaha expands its AV amplifier range with the RX300A and RX500A models

The new models are positioned at different levels in Yamaha's home theater amplifier range: the RX300A offers a 5.2-channel starting point, while the RX500A expands the package to 7.2 channels and adds network streaming.

Yamaha has introduced two new AV amplifiers aimed at home theater use. The new products are: 5.2-channel RX300A ja 7.2-channel RX500A, which aim to bring Dolby Atmos surround sound, modern HDMI features, and room-adaptive audio more easily into the living room entertainment system.

Yamaha's press release states that the models are aimed at playing movies, series, games, sports and music. Both amplifiers support Dolby Atmos playback, and they also have HDMI 2.1 connections for 4K/120 and 8K/60 video. For gaming, ALLM and VRR support are also included, and in terms of image quality, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and HLG are supported, among others.

The differences between the models are visible in the number of channels and streaming.

RX300A serves as the more affordable option in the lineup. It has a 5.2-channel structure, five amplifier channels and two subwoofer pre-outs. For Dolby Atmos use, the amplifier also supports flexible speaker layouts, where surround sound can be implemented either with virtual height effects or with ceiling speakers and upward-firing speakers. According to the RX300A product information, the power is stated as 70 watts per channel when driving two channels into an eight-ohm load.

RX500A takes things a step further with a 7.2-channel structure. It can be used to build, for example, a 5.2.2 speaker layout, which also includes height channels. In addition to Dolby Atmos, the RX500A supports DTS:X surround sound, and its wider format support is also reflected in features such as DTS-HD Master Audio and DTS Neural:X.

The clearest practical difference between the models, however, is in streaming. In the RX300A, wireless playback is based on Bluetooth 5.3 Multipoint, which allows you to pair two devices and switch between them. The RX500A adds Wi-Fi and Ethernet connections, as well as support for Spotify Connect, Google Cast, AirPlay 2, Tidal Connect, Qobuz Connect, internet radio and podcasts.

HDMI 2.1 and eARC are included in both

Both new products have four HDMI inputs and one HDMI output. HDMI eARC allows the TV's audio to be returned to the amplifier with a single cable, making it easier to connect current smart TVs, game consoles, and streaming devices to the same system.

In addition to HDMI, the connections include two analog RCA inputs, one optical digital input, one coaxial digital input, a headphone output, a USB connection, and an FM radio. According to the product information, an AM radio is not included. Both models also have Scene buttons, which can be used to store four different usage situations, for example, for movies, music, or evening use.

Room renovation and easy setup are emphasized

Yamaha has emphasized ease of setup with its new products. The included microphone measures the room's acoustics and speaker configuration, after which the amplifier automatically optimizes playback. The goal is to make it easier to set up a home theater without the user needing to know all the technical details of surround sound.

On-screen menus and a Quick Guide walk you through connecting speakers, a TV, and external devices, as well as selecting inputs. Sound modes include Pure Direct, Straight, Movie, All Channel Stereo, 2 Channel Stereo, Music, and Night.

The design leverages Yamaha's long AV heritage

According to the press release, the models have been designed using Yamaha's long experience in AV amplifiers. The company refers to the DSP-1 model, which was introduced in 1986, and after which home theater audio has been developed for almost four decades. The new models emphasize the importance of signal paths, component placement and HDMI circuit cooling, among other things.

Both models also feature Yamaha's ART Wedge, a fifth leg placed in the center of the device that is designed to dampen frame vibrations and support more accurate sound reproduction. A feature previously seen in Yamaha's more expensive AV amplifiers.

Prices and availability

The RX300A is scheduled to be available in August 2026. Its suggested retail price is set at 399 euros. The RX500A is scheduled to be available in September, but its suggested retail price will be announced later.

The new products complement Yamaha's AV amplifier range, especially for users who want to combine modern HDMI support, surround sound formats and automatic adjustments that make it easier to set up a home theater without a heavier multi-room or high-end package.
