Organized by Teosto and Musiikkituottajat ry Music listening in Finland 2023 study provides an in-depth overview of Finnish musical preferences. According to the study, younger age groups between 13 and 25 are at the forefront of the changes in music genres, while Finns have become more diverse in their music preferences over the last decade.
Finnish pop has risen to the top of the most popular genres among Finns, reaching 24 percent popularity. Right behind it come metal/hard rock and traditional rock, both with 22 percent popularity. The most significant increase is the approximately 10 percent rise in the popularity of Finnish pop over the past ten years, reaching 20 percent now.
Among festival attendees, pop has taken the top spot, overtaking rock compared to 2020. According to the Art University Festival Barometer 2022, pop, rock, and rap/hip-hop are the most popular genres at the festivals, reflecting the music tastes of young people. Youth music preferences differ from those of adults, and among those under 18, pop and rap/hip-hop are strong. Rock, however, is not as appealing to young people, which may be due to the different definitions of the genre. World music is also surprisingly popular among young people.
The factors influencing music listening vary from personality and media to relationships. Personal personality and temperament are the biggest influences, while media and relationships, such as parents, friends, and partners, significantly influence music taste.
Different age groups have their own influencers: for those over 56, listening to the radio and watching television become more important, while for those under 25, music videos on YouTube and music from friends play a key role. When looking at genres, the formation of musical tastes seems to be slightly different among different groups, such as those who listen to metal, prog rock, hip hop/rap, and jazz.
