At the Barcelona Mobile World Congress, Microsoft unveiled the new HoloLens 2 virtual glasses. These are standalone glasses, just like the first generation model introduced four years ago. They therefore do not require a phone or computer to be used as a companion.
In imaging, the glasses have received significant improvements, as they offer 2k resolution and a 52-degree field of view, whereas the predecessor model only reached 720p resolution and a 30-degree field of view. The resolution is now 47 pixels per degree. With HoloLens 2, you can also use glasses.
The new glasses are now able to track the user's gaze, which makes it possible to scroll through text with the eyes, for example. The glasses are also said to be better at reading the user's hand movements.
The design of HoloLens 2 has benefited from the heads of over 600 people, which were scanned using 36 cameras. In the interest of ease of use, the processor and battery have also been placed behind the device. The system chip is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 850, and the glasses also feature Microsoft’s revamped hpu, or holographic processing unit.
The spatial audio system is built into the device. It recognizes the user's voice and adapts to augmented reality. For online connections, HoloLens 2 requires a Wi-Fi connection, as it does not have mobile data connections.
The battery is built-in. It is charged using the USB-C connector, and it is promised to last three hours. The glasses weigh 566 grams, which makes them lighter than the original model by a few grams.
However, the price is quite steep – 3,500 dollars. It is also sold only to business customers. Pre-orders have started, and the finished glasses will start being delivered at some point in the coming year.
