Ahead of the CES 2022 consumer electronics event, a new HDMI standard has once again appeared., The Verge reports. The most important feature of HDMI 2.1a is the Source-Based Tone Mapping (SBTM), which allows program sources to better optimize the content for any given display. SBTM does not replace HDR10 or Dolby Vision, but complements them. The feature is also useful when watching the same material in multiple windows on the same screen at the same time. HDMI 2.1a support is possible to be introduced to devices with a device software update, depending on the device.
The new standard does not bring a change to the problems that have been addressed in recent weeks. Just as the issuance of the previous 2.0 certificate ended with version 2.1, the issuance of the 2.1 certificate will also end with the release of 2.1a. This time around, devices do not need to support SBTM despite the 2.1a designation. If you want to use this feature, you have to check the feature list. The new designation does not actually make it easier to find a suitable product, which should be the role of standards.
