Apple is According to a Bloomberg report Apple is developing its own display technology for the first time. Until now, Apple has used displays from external display panel manufacturers such as Samsung on its devices.
According to Bloomberg, 300 employees are working on developing the technology. This news came completely unexpectedly, as Apple has owned the microLED manufacturer LuxVu since 2014. Now, Bloomberg’s information revealed that the company has produced a functional display version at the end of last year.
In Santa Clara, California, there is a secret development center where it is possible to manufacture small batches of displays for the Apple Watch. It is therefore possible that the first Apple device using microLED technology would be a smartwatch. However, it will take approximately two years for actual mass production to begin, if it even happens at all.
In MicroLED displays, the subpixels of the pixels—the red, green, and blue—are lit independently. A similar technology has been seen from Sony in the past called CrystalLED. It is brighter, more energy efficient, thinner, and lighter than oled displays.
