OnePlus has unveiled its first tablet, the Android-powered OnePlus Pad. The OnePlus Pad is coming to the tablet market, which is dominated by Apple and Samsung. Originally named after its flagship smartphones, OnePlus has managed to sell them at significantly lower prices than Samsung or Apple; it will be interesting to see whether the OnePlus Pad can bring excitement to the Android tablet market in the same way.
The most convincing aspect of the tablet is its 144 Hz LCD display, featuring a unique 7:5 aspect ratio between the iPad-like 4:3 display and the Microsoft Surface Pro devices. This should make it flexible for both landscape and portrait mode, something that Samsung's tablets struggle with. Additionally, the display supports Dolby Vision HDR, and the Pad's four speakers system supports Dolby Atmos audio.
In addition to the interesting display, the Pad has an aluminum frame with a brushed metal finish. The tablet is available in only green color. Other features include a MediaTek Dimensity 9000 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of storage.
The OnePlus Pad has a 13-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel front camera. Video recording is at its best with the rear camera at 4K 30 fps and the front camera at 1080p 30 fps.
The battery in the Pad has 9510 milliamps, which is said to be sufficient for 14.5 hours of video playback and a month of standby time. The battery is charged using the 67-watt SuperVOOC fast charging technology, which charges the battery to 51% of its capacity in 30 minutes and to full capacity in 80 minutes. The charger is not included in the sales package.
The OnePlus Pad does not have a fingerprint reader, but there is face recognition based on the front camera. USB-C is the only connection on the device, so you won’t find a 3.5mm headphone jack. Like the iPad and Samsung tablets, you can connect the Pad with a keyboard case equipped with a trackpad or use a stylus available as an accessory to write on the screen. The OnePlus Pad does not have its own mobile network connection. When the device is outside Wi-Fi networks, it relies on connections with, for example, the OnePlus smartphone, with which connecting the OnePlus Pad should be easy and there should also be functions that facilitate the sharing of different devices, such as effortless data transfer between devices and a shared clipboard.
The operating system version of the OnePlus Pad is Android 13 as part of OxygenOS 13.1. OnePlus promises three significant OS updates for the tablet, as well as four years of security updates.
In terms of pricing, the Pad falls into the middle range – it’s more expensive than Apple’s entry-level iPads, but its hardware features compete with the much more expensive iPad Pro lineup. Conversely, it costs more than Samsung’s affordable tablets, but not nearly as much as the Tab S8 models, which have similar features.
The recommended price for the OnePlus Pad in Finland with 8+128 GB storage is 499 euros. Pre-orders start on April 28 at 12:00. Delivery of the OnePlus Pad will begin on May 18. Accessories for the Pad include a keyboard case for 149 euros, a pen for 99 euros, and a protective case for 69 euros.
